HEARTPINE FLOORING

Only antique heartpine is used. The wood is centuries old and the color is exquisite. The heartpine I use is available in widths from 2 ½” to 8”. Long lengths of heartpine are used as much as possible, meaning a long board is not cut for convenience. Also, the grain patterns are and colors are matched for a cohesive look.

RESTORATION CARPENTRY & WOODWORKING

Old House Restoration
Repairs made to parts of an old house that have become damaged or rotted.

This may include but not limited to:

  • Exterior doors
  • Windows
  • Porch Posts
  • Stairs
  • Siding—- I have some siding in stock for small repairs
  • Moldings

The repairs are made with either heartpine or cypress. The owner personally does the work. The wood is sized to the exact thickness and widths. When a wood finish is involved, I match the color and grain pattern before refinishing the repair. The repairs are secured with epoxy.

STAIRWAYS

Top quality material is chosen for stairs and the various parts that comprise a staircase. The wood is thick which is important for the look of the stairway. The parts usually arrive prefinished and ready for assembly.

INSTALLATION

  1. Laying of the floor boards begins only after the moisture readings taken from the sub-floor and flooring correlate to their proper spread. This is very important!
  2. The flooring is laid to allow for seasonal movement.
  3. The flooring is installed with a definite purpose. The hardest most durable boards go in high traffic areas, and exceptionally eye catching boards are placed in prominent places.
  4. Heartpine should be laid out to match grain color and type, whereas, with oak and other species, this is definitely not necessary.
  5. All transition boards, thresholds, and headers are custom made from the same material.
  6. Floor boards are nailed exceptionally well.

THE FINISH

waterlox_logo_244
Waterlox, a furniture-quality oil finish, is a stunningly beautiful formula of tung oil and varnish which deepens and enriches the natural quality of the wood. The company was founded in 1916 and is run by a brother and sister team. This finish will not peel or crack as some plastic coatings will. This finish may be re-coated without sanding. This is especially important for an old floor that can’t be sanded again.

REFINISHING

I do this job myself with the best equipment available. It is virtually dust free! My equipment is well maintained and new. I have many years of experience with the wood and my machines.

REPAIRS

When floors are in overall good condition, repair, without refinishing may be necessary. Termites, water damage, or pets can damage floors. In these types of cases I can usually remove the damage and replace it with prefinished boards, saving the homeowner or business owner from refinishing the entire floor.

NEW CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES

I take a comprehensive approach on this job type. Moisture readings are measured and noted on the plywood sub-floor or concrete before the next step can proceed. This is extremely important! The wood is acclimated to its environment and the moisture content of the sub-floor and the wood have to be within a certain range of each other. I oversee the project from this point till the furniture is in place with protective felt pads. I will also give cleaning and maintenance advice.
